Integrated Watershed Flow and Sedimentation Model Development

Through the Cooperation between Taiwan Water Resources Agency and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for the past decades, a series of emerging flow and mobile-bed numerical models for river system were designed and developed. The released numerical models are suitable for Taiwan’s water environment, including SRH-1D, SRH-2D and SRH-3D (Sedimentation and River Hydraulics – One-Dimension, Two-Dimension and Three-Dimension ) with the capability of flow, sediment transport, bedrock erosion, bank erosion, density current and dam breaching modeling. Currently, watershed runoff and soil erosion, estuary flow and sediment transport capability are also under development and to be integrate into the existing numerical models. They could be practically applied to the fields of river planning and management, water resources planning, hydrological analysis of cross-stream structures, urban flood management, etc. In the near feature, the utilize area can be extended to river basin hydrological, soil and water conservation, and coastal flow and sedimentation analysis.

Benefit from the non-commercial, open access and continuing development features, as well as a serious of intensive modeling promotion, the SRH models are not only employed by WRA engineers and researchers but also by the ones in consulting companies, research institutes, universities and other agencies for sustainable water resources. Some of the practical application and contribution projects in Taiwan are listed as followings: River Hydraulic and Sediment Transport Characteristic Analysis (26 central administrative Rives, etc.), Soft-bedrock Erosion Modeling (Da-An River, Da-Jia River, Jhuo-Shuei River, Ba-Jhang River, etc.), Flood Disaster Analysis (Jhuo-Shuei River, Chen-You-Lan River, He-She River etc.), River Restoration Evaluation (Ci-Jia-Wan Creek, etc.), Fish Habitat Index Calculation (Da-An River, Bie-Xi, etc.), Reservoir Density Current Sediment Sluicing Project Evaluation ( Shih-Men Reservoir, Zeng-Wun Reservoir, Wu-She Reservoir, etc.), River Regulation Engineering Design( Jhuo-Shuei River, Cing-Shuei River, etc.), Hydraulic Physical Model Study( Shi-Men Reservoir Density Current Sediment Sluicing project, Embankment Toe Scour and Protection Experiment, Stability Analysis of Shuei-Wei Levee in Da-An River, etc.), Integrated Water Resources Planning (Shih-Gan Dam, etc.), Evaluation of Water Intake Improvement Project for Agriculture Canal (Da-Jin Intake in Jhuo-Kou-Xi of Kao-Ping River, etc.), Analysis of Improvement Schemes for Flood Pumping Stations (Xin-Bei Pumping Station, Ta-Liao-Keng Pumping Station, etc.), And the Hydrological Analysis of the Highway Structure (Da-Li Interchange of Highway no. 74, Water Pipeline Bridge on the Hou-Long River, etc.).
