Project origin and purpose

To reduce the water supply in Taoyuan and Hsinchu and reduce the impact of excessive turbidity in Shimen Reservoir. The Water Resources Planning Institute published the preliminary planning report of the Project of JhongJhuang Bank-Side Reservoir in December 1995. The results indicate that technical, social and environmental aspects can be implemented. And the Water Resources Bureau has assigned to continue to conduct feasibility planning to confirm that the policy, economic and financial aspects are also implemented. The Water Resources Planning Institute completed more than ten feasibility planning report in 1997. The environmental impact statement was approved by the Environmental Protection Administration in October 1998. And the project was approved by the Executive Yuan in December of the same year.

1. Regulate and store the remaining water source of Dahanxi, improve the normal water supply capacity of Taoyuan and Banxin areas.
2. Cooperate with Shimen Reservoir Operation for Sediment Flushing to promote sustainable use of water resources.
3. Strengthen water source backup capacity and improve the stability of tap water supply in Taoyuan and Banxin areas.

Project Data

The Project of JhongJhuang Bank-Side Reservoir location showed in Figure 1. There are three main projects in the plan, which are described as follows.

• Water Intake Weir
  • Laction：About 1.1 km downstream of Wuling Bridge
  • Type：Stepped weir and concrete box culvert
  • Length/ Elevation：200 meter/5 meter
  • Design diversion flow：10 m³/s
  • Intake channel length：about 1.5kilometer
• Bank-Side Reservoir
  • Development area：87 ha
  • Storage Area：76 ha
  • Water storage capacity：about 7,100,000 m³
  • Effective Water storage capacity： about 6,900,000 m³
  • Storage depth：15 and 12 meter for first and second storage area
• Water Conveyance Project
  • Design conveyance capacity：800,000 m³/day
  • Conveyance type：Steel pipe
  • Conveyance distance：3.4 kilometer

Expected effect and impact

The project includes remediation of abandoned rivers in Zhongzhuang and the construction of the Dahan River bank to become a hydrophilic and high-quality environment. It will not only drive the development of neighboring areas but also strengthen the water resources backup capacity of Shimen Reservoir and Dahanxi River. Slowing down the water shortage crisis caused by population development in Taoyuan and Banxin areas.
