“Forum on NBS for flood mitigation-EU cases” in Taipei

Water Resources Agency promoted Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to deal with flood hazard mitigation and holds an international forum in Taipei on Oct. 9th, 2019. The speakers include Dr. Chien-Hsin Lai (Director-General of WRA), Prof. Zoran Vojinovic (IHE Delft, RECONECT project coordinator), Prof. Peter Froehle (Institute of River and Coastal Engineering, Hamburg University of Technology), and Dr. Joao Leitao (Department of Urban Water Management, Eawag). More than 150 participants from government, institutions, universities and consulting companies attended the forum.
Dr. Chien-Hsin Lai mentioned that the core concept of NBS in water disaster prevention is to pay attention to “Water”, “Natural” and “People” at the same time (Figure 1) and was looking forward to the cooperation with EU on flood disaster mitigation and prevention. Besides, he presented guests with the commemorative T-shirts and took a lovely picture as shown in Figure 2. Thereafter, Prof. Zoran Vojinovic presented the details of the RECONECT project and its ambitions to support NBS implementation in Taiwan. Prof. Peter Froehle shared the experience of coastal protection using NBS and Eco-friendly approaches. Finally, Dr. Joao Leitao shared the restoration experience of the Thur river in Switzerland. The forum ended up in a warm discussion, hosted by Prof. Wei-Cheng Lo, between participants and speakers (Figure 3 and Figure 4).
